About the Creator of Renewal of Literacy, co-author of The Roadmap to Literacy, and author of Continuing the Journey to Literacy.
Jennifer Militzer-Kopperl has been a private Remedial Specialist since 2005. She graduated from Grand Valley State University with a degree in Russian Studies (1994) and went on to complete two years of graduate work at The University of Kansas in Slavic Languages and Literatures. She took a job at Lindamood -Bell Learning Processes teaching remedial reading, math, and language comprehension. Soon after she realized that she had found her vocation: remedial education. She returned to school to get a degree in Waldorf education (Rudolf Steiner College, Fair Oaks, 2005) and has been working with Waldorf students ever since.
The inspiration to write The Roadmap to Literacy came when Jennifer realized that most of her Waldorf students fit a certain profile and that she could explain the roots of the problem and how to fix it by using her background in foreign languages and linguistics. She thought her observations would help current Waldorf teachers and future generations of students, so she began offering various workshops on remedial reading to area Waldorf schools. She wrote Roadmap with Janet Langley in order to engage a larger audience.
Since publishing Roadmap, Jennifer has dedicated her life to writing the sequel: Continuing the Journey to Literacy: A Guide to Teaching Language Arts in Waldorf Schools Grades 4 through 8. It picks up where Roadmap leaves off and expands outward to consider language arts in the entire Waldorf curriculum. Jennifer’s two books form a complete program for teaching language arts in Waldorf Schools grades 1–8. She calls this program Renewal of Literacy. Jennifer is the creator of www.renewalofliteracy.com.
Jennifer Militzer-Kopperl lives with her husband and their cat.
